I will presenting a new body of work, titled “Pick Your Poison,” at 111 Minna on Friday, September 6th
Ours is an era of unprecedented gluttony, where the abundance that meets our every need is outdone only by our mounting desires for more. This is the crux of our consumer culture, established on the fundamental notion that “enough” is never enough. Corporate overseers work tirelessly to ensure that our bottomless desires are satisfied only temporarily, and that every satisfaction is short lived, followed quickly by a stronger urge for more. This cycle of indulgence is intentionally crafted by those who profit from it, and our resulting decisions inevitably come at the detriment of our own well-being. Convinced our actions are our own, we are the unwitting accomplices to our own demise, indulging in gratifications that are deceiving, and often toxic.
In my solo exhibition, Pick Your Poison, I take a dive into this phenomenon, employing satire to address themes of consumerism, beauty, desire, and advertising. The body of work functions as a pop-tragic-comedy, juxtaposing elements of nature and beauty with the contaminants of corporate drug culture and advertising, operating on the explicit tension between the two. Corporate logos interplay with botanical designs and animals engaged in consumption to create a layered narrative that is simultaneously cheeky and dead serious. The work mirrors the phenomenon it addresses, presenting itself as desirable and alluring, and yet not hiding its devilish agenda; you know it’s bad for you, but you want it anyway.

I've curated an art show the last three Novembers, and I'm very pleased to announce this year's upcoming annual Fall endeavor, Emergent, at 1:AM Gallery, Nov 6th. The brainchild of myself and friend Christopher de Leon, we each chose three artists to accompany us, and I'm really honored to be showing with such a talented, quality group of artist.
The process of creating is a journey of exploration. An artist's thoughts, habits, instincts, history, these are the pixels that, together, create the portrait of a creative being. The artist themselves is a facilitating conduit, the elements beneath the conscious surface organize, interlace, and emerge from the cocoon of self, a cohesive, artistic thought. It is the Grand Magic, the emergent properties of style, and substance, and self. And for the artist, it is an act of trust that has been cultivated all their life. Emergent, this November at 1:AM, is the manifestation of this idea. It views art not as a linear thought, but a tapestry of experience woven by a skilled hand. The work itself is the chronicle of the happening, the many becoming the one. It is the story of why we paint, why we live, who we are, stardust on stardust, voices in the void.
I lived in Colorado for about 7 years, and in that time I met some of the most interesting, down-to-Earth, fun group of artists to be found anywhere. There's just something cool going on out there, and so I was really glad to be included in Helikon Gallery's upcoming lineup of artists, hailing from all across the country, showing in the beautiful city of Denver, a place very close to my heart. Muses of Mount Helikon 2, opening Saturday, Nov 1st, 3675 Wynkoop St, Denver, CO
Modern Eden Gallery will be hosting an art show tribute to famed French cabaret Le Chat Noir, opening the evening of October 18th. 6-10pm, 801 Greenwich San Francisco, CA
Le Chat Noir (French for "The Black Cat") was a nineteenth-century entertainment establishment, in the bohemian Montmartre district of Paris. Le Chat Noir is thought to be the first modern cabaret: a nightclub where the patrons sat at tables and drank alcoholic while being entertained by a variety show on stage. Perhaps best known now by its iconic Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen poster art, in its heyday it was a bustling nightclub that was part artist salon, part rowdy music hall.
